The New York Times, April 12th edition, includes children's best sellers. I concur with their recommendation for the following books;
Listen to the Wind: The Story of Dr. Greg and " Three Cups of Tea" It is the children's version of an adult book about Greg Mortenson's building of schools in Pakistan.
Boy in Striped Pajamas by John Boyne. A very poignant look at the holocaust through the eyes of a young boy.

Luna
This is a gripping young adult book by Julie Anne Peters about a male-female transgender person. Family dynamics as well as personal trials are presented through the voice of Regan, who is Luna's sister. Luna was born Liam and is trapped in a male body. Would you consider this to be a controversial book?

The Wednesdays Wars
I highly recommend The Wednesday Wars by Gary Schmidt. It is a Newbery Honor Book. It is a first person narrative told by a middle school student. You will laugh, cry, and turn pages quickly to find out what happens next. This could be a young adult or realistic fiction book. Enjoy.
